Who Are the Seven Dwarfs?

The seven dwarfs are a friendly (well, most of them!) group of mining dwarfs who are known for their appearance in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. They have distinct personalities and are beloved by most of the Disney fandom.

The Original Seven Dwarfs

Before I move on to talking about the dwarfs from Snow White, I’ll quickly touch on the OG dwarfs!

If you didn’t know, the story of Snow White was a Brothers Grimm tale that was released in 1812.

It was called “Little Snow White” and sometimes “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”. In German, it was “Sneewittchen”!

The ever-popular story was tale 53 in a giant book called Grimms’ Fairy Tales. The story contained all the classic elements of the modern story, including the Evil Queen, the mysterious glass coffin, and the dwarves.

The dwarfs in the original tale let Snow White stay with them if she acted as their housemaid.

Although a few people might argue that this is like the 1937 film, Snow White cleaned the house without anyone asking in the movie.

Oh, and they didn’t have individual names either!

The original Seven Dwarfs burst onto the stage!

But this all changed in 1912 when a Broadway play was created based on the original source material.

It debuted at the Little Theatre in New York City and starred Marguerite Clark.

The original seven dwarfs names came to light in Scene 3 and they were: Blick, Flick, Glick, Snick, Plick, Whick, and Quee.

It’s a completely useless piece of trivia, but it’s said that Quee had issues with kleptomania as he kept thieving during the play.

You’ve got to give them props for creativity!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Names: The New-Age Dwarfs!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first big-screen debut of the original tale, and it burst onto screens in 1937.

It was adapted by an excellent team of storyboard artists and was eventually nominated for Best Musical Score at the Academy Awards.

The movie cost a huge $1.5 million USD to produce (which would be around $31 million in modern dollars!). Luckily, it was a commercial success and raked in $8 million dollars during its first release.

It was so popular, that it was even the highest-grossing sound film for a short time during its year of release!

This was a huge relief for Walt Disney, as it allowed him to charge forward with other grand plans that he had for the brand.

The new Seven Dwarfs names appear!

When Walt Disney got hold of the story, he decided to change the dwarfs’ names to what we know and love today.

He knew that they needed to have memorable names and striking personalities that would reel in an audience and keep them talking.

Although a few names were considered (like Tubby and Wheezy!), they eventually landed on Doc, Grumpy, Sleepy, Happy, Dopey, Bashful, and Sneezy.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Summary

If you’re completely new to the Snow White game, you may want to briefly know what it’s about.

It follows the simple story of a beautiful girl called Snow White who’s forced to flee to the forest after the Evil Queen tells a huntsman to kill her.

She successfully gets away and happens upon a charming house in the middle of the woods. And guess who owns it – that’s right, the seven dwarfs!

She starts cleaning their home and they find her when they arrive back from the diamond mines.

They’re very confused, but they allow her to shelter from the Queen until she’s safe.

The queen eventually finds her and disguises herself as an old woman who offers Snow White a poisoned apple.

Snow White bites into it and collapses into a deep sleep until her true love (the prince!) finds her.

At the end of the film, the queen is killed and Snow White is saved.

Hooray for a good old-fashioned happily ever after!

What are the Seven Dwarfs Names?

Bashful

seven dwarves names bashful

Bashful is the romantic dwarf of the bunch and he’s known for his shy personality and constant blushing. You’ll also spot him hiding behind his beard when he gets nervous or embarrassed!

He doesn’t say so during the movie, but it’s strongly hinted that he has a huge crush on Snow White.

He adores the idea of love and even asks Snow White to tell a love story to the dwarfs one night.

Bashful is one of the slimmest and shortest dwarfs and he has huge hazel eyes and long eyelashes. He wears an ochre tunic with red pants, a belt around his waist, and a teal hat.

Doc

Doc is the oldest dwarf and is seen as the leader of the pack. He’s pot-bellied and slightly bossy, but he’s loveable and means well.

He has a habit of losing his train of thought part-way through a sentence. So, the dwarfs sometimes have trouble following what he’s talking about.

Walt Disney added this to the script as he thought it might make Doc seem more approachable and down-to-earth during those moments of authority!

Despite this, the dwarfs still follow his orders without question. Except for Grumpy that is – those two are always at odds. This might be because Doc isn’t great under pressure and often gets flustered and panicked when faced with big decisions.

He’s recognized by his red tunic, yellow hat, and glasses (which make him look intelligent!). This dwarf is voiced by Roy Atwell in the 1937 movie, and he gives the character plenty of oomph!

Although he’s usually down at the mines, Doc can also be found building furniture, fixing things around the house, and trying to solve problems.

Dopey

Dopey is the sweetest dwarf of the bunch and doesn’t say a word throughout the entire movie.

He’s not overly useful as he seems almost childlike, but he’s loved by all the dwarfs, Snow White, and audiences!

He wears a large purple hat and a green tunic with a belt. He’s also the only dwarf that doesn’t have a beard or any real hair!

Although Dopey doesn’t have any lines, voice actor Mel Blanc made sure he made plenty of noise! Listen out for his squeaks, mumbles, and bubbling throughout the film.

It’s said that Dopey is Snow White’s favorite dwarf as she pays him the most attention.

If you can’t get enough of Dopey, you can spot him in The Winged Scourge (1943) and The Wonderful Spring of Mickey!

Grumpy

Grumpy is one of the most iconic seven dwarfs names and the character was voiced by Pinto Colvig (who also voiced Goofy!). Despite his bad attitude, he’s still among the most popular dwarfs with audiences!

He’s not a huge fan of Dopey or Doc, but he gets along with them when he needs to. And hey – he does care deeply about Snow White when it counts!

Grumpy usually stands with his arms crossed and with an enormous frown on his face. He rarely (if ever!) smiles, but he softens towards the end of the movie when he nearly loses Snow White.

Happy

Happy is the cheeriest dwarf of the bunch and is voiced by Otis Harlan in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

He’s a huge fan of eating, dancing, and partying. Basically, he just wants to have a great time whenever he can!

He was meant to be one of the film’s most comically tragic characters, but the writers quickly abandoned this idea and made him an eternal optimist instead.

When he’s not eating or drinking, he’s laughing and yodeling!

Sleepy

Sleepy is one of the less well-known dwarfs as he spends most of his time yawning or catching some shut-eye! He’s voiced by Sterling Holloway who also had a star turn as the voice of Winnie the Pooh for many years.

Although he’s constantly tired, he’s not one to shy away from hard work. He still works down the mines and helps around the house when needed.

The animators struggled to make Sleepy look tired in original animation drafts. So, animator Fred Moore eventually decided to draw one eye bigger than the other to make the point!

If you watch carefully, you’ll probably spot him falling over himself or accidentally running into things because he’s always half asleep.

Sneezy

As you might have guessed from this seven dwarf’s name, he sneezes – a lot! You may think that he’s constantly ill, but Walt Disney has said that it’s to do with allergies. Poor Sneezy. As he says “”you can’t tell, when you gotta, you gotta!”.

Billy Gilbert voices this dwarf and he manages to make those sneezes sound uber-realistic! He also speaks with a stuffy noise throughout the film.

Facts about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

If you’re on the hunt for some fun facts about the seven dwarfs, then I’ve got you covered!

Here are a few of my favorite pieces of trivia

1. Doc might be the oldest dwarf (and the wisest!), but he wasn’t even in the original draft of the movie. It wasn’t until later that Doc was added to mellow out the character of grumpy.

2. Despite his name, Happy is one of the angriest dwarfs and isn’t afraid to attack intruders or protect the ones he loves.

3. Grumpy loves Snow White by the end of the movie, but it’s clear that he doesn’t trust women. In fact, he thinks they’re all witches!

4. Sleepy is drawn with one eye slightly smaller than the other to give him a drowsy look.

5. We’ve established that Dopey doesn’t say anything throughout the film, but this wasn’t always the case. Mel Blanc was signed on to voice Dopey (the voice of Bugs Bunny, BTW!). But when the producers went a different way, they no longer needed an actor to voice Dopey.

6. Happy is the only dwarf that Snow White doesn’t name during the movie.
