October 20, 2023

Are you trying to figure out whether scare actors can touch you at Halloween Horror Nights? I’ll answer all your questions right here to put your mind at ease (or you know, freak you out!).

Halloween Horror Nights is undeniably scary, and I’ve been to both the American and Singaporean versions.

I’ll say that they have very different approaches (and I adore the local touches in Singapore!).

But if you’re worried about the scare actors (and whether they can touch you!) at Halloween Horror Nights, I’ve got you covered.

The first time I went to this event, I honestly didn’t know what the rules were.

But this quick rundown should answer everything you need to know about touching and physical boundaries at Halloween Horror Nights.

Now let’s do this thing.

Can They Touch You at Halloween Horror Nights?

The answer is no, they can’t touch you at Halloween Horror Nights – no matter how terrifying they look!

They could be a ghost or a ghoul, a devil or a witch or even a hideously clad old hag.

No matter how withered or bloody their arms are they won’t touch you.

So, you can rest easy (kind of!).

How Close Do Actors Get to You at Halloween Horror Nights?

They will not touch you, but they will get VERY close to you.

And trust me, a gorily made-up zombie just eyeing you up as their next meal is still guaranteed to get the adrenaline to kick in.

The power of suggestion is super scary and you really can terrify people without any physical contact.

Add to this the fact that you will likely also be in a confined space with a mummy or werewolf round the next corner and the chill factor rises further.

Probably the last thing you would want to do is to touch them, which is just as well as this is strictly forbidden.

A Note on Scare Actor Attacks

It’s been a worrying trend that recently the safety of scare actors has been discussed. And that’s because attacks on some staff have been reported.

Recent attacks at Universal Studios have included soaking actors with water bottles and more disturbingly, actual physical attacks.

The most recent of these can be seen in this Twitter/X video where a guest actually HURLS THEIR ENTIRE BODY at a scare actor.

I’ve put the video in below in case you’re interested:

The user Jake Coasters even commented that:

“This has to stop. I sure hope Universal Hollywood has seen this video and taken legal action. Unfortunately this type of behavior has been on the rise at theme parks and haunt events.”

It has been suggested that alcohol is partially to blame, and some have laid the blame at boisterous teenagers.

Whatever the cause, it’s a sign that thrill seekers should RESPECT THE ACTORS. They are trying to entertain you and use their skills to give you a great time, they shouldn’t feel unsafe while they are doing it.

Scare actor Peyton McCormick also noted that:

“The majority of people are wonderful and they showed up for the right reasons,” McCormick said. “But there’s always a handful of people, and by handful I mean a big handful of people who are there to start fights with the performers, it seems.”

In short, just don’t start fights with the scare actors, folks!

What Can Scare Actors Do at Halloween Horror Nights?

Apart from trying to scare you with the power of suggestion, scare actors at Halloween Horror Nights can’t really do much.

They cannot touch you, but the whirling of a blood-soaked implement from a deranged looking creature is likely to have the desired effect!

The actors will also respond to your reactions.

If you stay calm they are likely to move on quickly, but if you stand there wailing and bawling, you’re likely to be a prime target!

If you are particularly concerned about whether you will be the next target, go with a friend and offer them up instead.

It’s all about self-preservation after all!

How Do You Avoid the Scare Actors at Halloween Horror Nights?

To help your chances of emerging with your dignity intact there is no doubt that there is strength in numbers.

You might not want to offer your friend up as I suggested previously but if you go with more than one friend or even in a big group you make it less likely that it will be you who meets the rotting corpse around the next corner.

Also, be brave!

Give yourself superhero staring skills and look as though you can handle the ordeal even if you do feel like this is the last place on earth you want to be.

Tips for Surviving Halloween Horror Nights

Do your research

If you are concerned about the experience it’s always worth looking at the layout of the experience.

If there is a dark area, you can be sure that it will be occupied buy something unpleasant. Also jump scares work best by presenting the horror when you have been lulled into a false sense of comfort.

If it’s gone quiet and uneventful, it won’t be for much longer!

It’s worth remembering too, that scare actors are very good at what they do and you’re paying good money to be scared.

If they catch you and you scream like a banshee, enjoy the moment! When you do make it out, this will be what you talk about most afterwards.

If you still insist on putting on as much armor as you can, then research could be your greatest defender.

At Halloween Horror Nights, you can find out what the different scare zones are and also what’s in them.

The content in the scare zones changes, so you can`t rely on old research.

For this year, the 5 zones are:

  • Dr. Oddfellow’s Collection of Horror
  • Dark Zodiac
  • Jungle of Doom: Expedition Horror
  • Vamp ’69: Summer of Blood
  • Shipyard 32: Horrors Unhinged

With the curiosity of Dr Jekyll and the application of Victor Frankenstein you will be amazed at what you can find out!
